Sea duck hunting in Kodiak

from Kodiak Raspberry Island Remote Lodge is a balance of tide, wind, sunshine, and feed.  Depending on species, birds may stage along kelp beds, rocky points, reef structure, protected bays, sloughs, and narrow channels throughout Raspberry, Afognak, and Kodiak Islands. Incoming and outgoing tides influence feeding movement, while wind direction affects flight paths, decoy placement, and boat positioning. Short winter daylight hours and occasional clear, calm mornings add their own rhythm to the season.

The bays and channels surrounding the lodge offer protection and reliable forage for wintering birds. That said, this is still Kodiak, Alaska in late fall and early winter. Strong winds, shifting seas, rain, snow, freezing temperatures, and occasional ice are part of the landscape…just another day in the life of a sea duck hunter.

When conditions limit distance, opportunity remains close to home. Productive shoreline lies directly in front of the lodge, and moderate weather on one side of the island can allow access to the lee on the other. Calm days can be plentiful, but flexibility is essential.

Hunts may involve layout boats, our open duck boat, beach setups, and tidal edge positioning along rocky shoreline, depending on weather and targeted species.

Thanks for the best week of my life so far. My first buck, my first doe. I’ll never forget my experience here. It is my new dream to come back…I will highly recommend KRIRL.
